Applicants should follow these steps to start an application:

  • Create an account 
  • Search for Mississippi State University Accelerated MSN (Prelicensure)
  • Use Program ID 393099
  • Complete the application following instructions provided by NursingCAS.

General Requirements

  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree (non-nursing) from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA on previous coursework
  • Minimum grade of “C” in each pre-requisite course
  • Submit a recent (within 5 years) standardized test score. Acceptable tests include: 
      • Nursing admission exam (e.g. TEAS, HESI).
      • Graduate admission exam (e.g. GRE, GMAT, MCAT)
        • GRE scores should be sent to MSU-Nursing through ETS (School Code: 1283)
      • Other approved admission test score reports should be uploaded to NursingCAS in the designated Documents tab.
      • Note: Applicants who have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher may waive the standardized test requirement and are not required to submit test scores.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation
  • A written personal statement based on prompt given in NursingCAS application
  • Submit a curriculum vita or resume
  • Selected applicants will be invited to campus for a preview day and personal interview.

Prerequisite Courses

Complete all pre-requisite courses with at least a grade of a "C" in each course, with no more than two courses outstanding at the time of application.

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I with lab
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II with lab
  • General Microbiology with lab
  • General Chemistry I with lab or Introductory Logic or Introductory Philosophy
  • Introduction to Statistics
  • Nutrition
  • Human Growth and Development or Developmental Psychology

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose native language is not English and/or who have completed their tertiary education primarily outside of the United States must submit official scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), as evidence of English language proficiency. The minimum TOEFL-Paper Based Test (PBT) score is 550. The minimum TOEFL-Internet Based Test (IBT) score is 79. The results of this test should be submitted using MSU's institutional code 1480.

MSU Nursing Technical Standards

Technical Standards are non-academic requirements essential for meeting the academic requirements of the program. The following technical skills are required of a successful student in the nursing program.

Critical Thinking and Cognitive Competencies

Critical thinking and cognitive abilities for effective clinical reasoning and clinical judgement consistent with expectations of graduate-level students

Professional Relationships

Interpersonal skills sufficient for professional interactions with a diverse population of individuals, families, and groups

Communication

Communication adeptness sufficient for verbal and written professional interactions

Mobility

Physical abilities sufficient for movement from room to room and in small spaces

Motor Skills

Gross and fine motor abilities sufficient for providing safe, effective nursing care

Hearing and Visual

Auditory and visual ability sufficient for observing, monitoring, and assessing health needs

Observation

Ability to make observations in connection with other identified professional nursing student competencies

Tactile Sense

Tactile ability sufficient for physical assessment

Legal Resident Status

Students are classified as in-state or out-of-state for the purpose of paying University fees. The MSU Office of Admissions and Scholarships will make the initial classification at the time a student's application for admission is processed. The burden of proof for establishing residency resides with the applicant. If a student misrepresents their status, the student shall be responsible for paying the fees the student would have otherwise been required to pay and will be subject to disciplinary action or dismissal from school. The University Registrar is authorized to change a student's residence status upon receipt of evidence that the student is improperly classified.
